Joint Lutheran and Roman Catholic Statement on the Doctrine of Justificatiion by Faith Alone.

Joint Lutheran and Roman Catholic Statement on the Doctrine of Justificatiion by Faith Alone. April 27, 2015 Sam Logan

The doctrine of justification by faith alone is an extraordinarily important doctrine.

It was the central doctrine which Martin Luther believed the 16th century Roman Catholic Church had "lost."

Over the years, there have been many conversations between Lutherans (and other Protestants) and Roman Catholics about this doctrine and about whether any "common ground" might be found between Protestants and Catholics.  As the 500th anniversary of the start of the Reformation approaches, such conversations take on added significance.

Attached to this article is a document which represents one of the results of the above-mentioned conversations.  THE WRF DOES NOT ENDORSE THIS DOCUMENT.  But we do believe it is worth reading and discussing.  Doing so may very well lead all of us simply to re-affirm our historic position on the doctine of justification.  But it also may give us some added insights about where the very real differences among our thrological traditions lie. Both the Vatican and the Lutheran World Federation have officially signed and affirmed this document.
