WRF Member Leo Douma Writes on "Christ’s Under-Shepherds: An Exploration of Pastoral Care Methods by Elders"

WRF Member Leo Douma Writes on "Christ’s Under-Shepherds: An Exploration of Pastoral Care Methods by Elders" July 13, 2016, by Sam Logan -- A New Book by WRF Member Leo Douma

The Bible is very clear that the task of the elders, the 'under shepherds' to Jesus the 'Chief shepherd' is to care for 'God's flock'. Unfortunately in numerous denominations around the world it's become clear that the main method for elders to provide spiritual oversight, namely home visiting, is failing to be done well or at all, and even when done not providing the spiritual benefit it is supposed to do.

This book provides a detailed analysis of the problems associated with the pastoral care provided by elders in the Reformed and Presbyterian churches. The literature search carefully reviews books and journals from around the world. And the focus groups of communicant members and elders in the Australian Christian Reformed Churches setting provide very real, practical details that ground the issues.

This book also explores a way forward to overcome the problems that have been identified.  What is explored is not just theory but using a process call 'action research' it demonstrates how elders themselves can find a solution to provide better pastoral care in their particular setting. The process looks at how the elders can better assist with the spiritual growth of their members.

Some evaluations of the book:

“Douma has provided a great service in not only providing the diagnosis of a crisis in pastoral care, but also taking steps toward a solution. . . . Fascinating research which promises to benefit the flock of Jesus Christ.” - Dr. Tim Witmer, Westminster Theological Seminary (Philadelphia)

“Leo Douma . . . has provided a very practical and helpful resource for working pastors . . . the problem he raises is a common one in many denominations. . . . the church at large needs to learn from Douma.” - Dr. Michael Milton, Reformed Theological Seminary (Charlotte)
